Quick answer

Bilen Utan Riba was founded in 2025 by Rafi Mohammad in Stockholm after trying to find halal car financing in Sweden and finding nothing that held up. The formal company is Ribafri AB. We are a small team in Stockholm, reviewed by three independent Shariah scholars and supported by a Swedish law firm. This is our story, why we are building this, and how we intend to keep our promise.

How it started

It started with a car.

When I, as a Muslim in Sweden, tried to buy my first car without falling into riba I called three banks. Two said they "did not know of any halal alternative." The third said I could "pay cash or lease." I could not pay 280,000 SEK cash. And the leasing turned out to be interest-based at the core.

I called five mosques. Three could not give a clear answer. One said "ask your imam." One said "we do not have products to recommend."

I spoke to 40+ other Muslims in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo who had the same problem. Three workarounds came up:

  1. Buy a worse, cheaper car for cash - most common
  2. Take the conventional loan and make istighfar - second most common, everyone felt bad about it
  3. Wait for years - third most common

None of these felt like the answer. So I decided to build it.

Who is Rafi Mohammad?

I am the founder. Here is what you need to know:

  • Prior experience building and running companies in Sweden
  • Muslim, practicing

Why am I the right person for this?

I am not an Islamic finance expert. That is why I have a Shariah Supervisory Board with three independent scholars from three schools. I am not a Swedish consumer credit law expert. That is why we have a Swedish law firm reviewing every contract. What I am: someone who has lived this problem, who can build and run a company, and who is personally accountable for this being genuinely halal.

What I have gotten wrong so far:

  • My first contract template had a clause our supervisory board rejected. I rewrote it.
  • My first pricing model was too aggressive. I corrected it.
  • I underestimated the time to full Shariah approval. We opened the waitlist six months later than planned.

Being open about these mistakes is not a mistake. It is how trust is built.

  • Auditor: appointed before the first financial year
  • Legal counsel: a Swedish law firm reviews all consumer contracts (name published once the engagement is formalised)

The company is not a bank, not part of any bank, and not affiliated with any foreign Islamic finance institution. We are an independent Swedish limited company.

Our promise

We promise three things:

1. Nothing here will ever be haram.
If we miss something, we will fix it openly, refund affected customers, and update the contract publicly.

2. Everything will be public.
Fatwa, contract, AAOIFI mapping, accountability. No hidden incentives.

3. We will never grow faster than our ability to keep it halal.
Better 100 satisfied Founding Members in 2026 than 10,000 customers with compromises.
